From October to December, bushfires frequently occur in the Ambatondrazaka area, where Madagasikara Voakajy operates. These fires are often caused by slash-and-burn agriculture, pasture clearing, farm preparation, or even the burning of escape routes used by cattle thieves.

Fires completely destroy the progress made in forest restoration efforts. They kill newly planted seedlings, wipe out various plant and animal species, and lead to soil erosion and land degradation.

For this reason, since 2023, Madagasikara Voakajy has established a fire management committee in its intervention area. This committee is made up entirely of local community members. They are responsible for awareness-raising, setting up firebreaks, monitoring through an alert system, and direct firefighting actions.

Protecting the forest cannot be done alone. It requires collective action, training, and strict law enforcement, because fire can destroy years of hard work in just a few minutes.
